New computers for the Center for Communication Excellence
This proposal requests funding to equip the Center for Communication Excellence (CCE) with new computers to better facilitate more free consultations on academic and professional communication.
This proposal requests funding to equip the Center for Communication Excellence (CCE) with new computers to better facilitate more free consultations on academic and professional communication. The number of students seeking written and oral communication support in the CCE is steadily increasing; however, not all students can be served in a timely and efficient way due to a lack of operable computers. This funding will not only allow to expand services to on-campus students, but will also for the first time help distance learning students develop communication skills.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, 1,381 students on campus benefitted from one-on-one consultations with our disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and English writing consultants. Prepared through long-term and in-depth training, our consultants assist with any type of written communication (e.g., thesis/dissertation chapters, journal articles, conference proceedings papers, posters, grant proposals, cover letters, teaching philosophies, research statements, etc.). Both the number of consultations and the number of students seeking writing support are increasing dramatically as word spreads about the CCE.
However, a major challenge that impedes satisfying the growing demand and addressing students’ writing needs, especially of students in distance learning programs, is the outdated and extremely inefficient computers, some of which are no longer working. Replacing them with new state-of-the-art computers will greatly improve efficiency of face-to-face consulting, enable new synchronous and asynchronous online feedback to off-campus students, and enhance access to web-based writing software and materials.
The Graduate College has already provided the space, desks, and chairs to host face-to-face and online consultations; we now simply need the computers.
