New computers for the Center for Communication Excellence

This proposal requests funding to equip the Center for Communication Excellence (CCE) with new computers to better facilitate more free consultations on academic and professional communication.

This proposal requests funding to equip the Center for Communication Excellence (CCE) with new computers to better facilitate more free consultations on academic and professional communication. The number of students seeking written and oral communication support in the CCE is steadily increasing; however, not all students can be served in a timely and efficient way due to a lack of operable computers. This funding will not only allow to expand services to on-campus students, but will also for the first time help distance learning students develop communication skills.

In the 2015-2016 academic year, 1,381 students on campus benefitted from one-on-one consultations with our disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and English writing consultants. Prepared through long-term and in-depth training, our consultants assist with any type of written communication (e.g., thesis/dissertation chapters, journal articles, conference proceedings papers, posters, grant proposals, cover letters, teaching philosophies, research statements, etc.).  Both the number of consultations and the number of students seeking writing support are increasing dramatically as word spreads about the CCE.

However, a major challenge that impedes satisfying the growing demand and addressing students’ writing needs, especially of students in distance learning programs, is the outdated and extremely inefficient computers, some of which are no longer working. Replacing them with new state-of-the-art computers will greatly improve efficiency of face-to-face consulting, enable new synchronous and asynchronous online feedback to off-campus students, and enhance access to web-based writing software and materials.

The Graduate College has already provided the space, desks, and chairs to host face-to-face and online consultations; we now simply need the computers.

During my appointment I used the tutor's laptop which makes the consultant process hard for me.

This program definitely needs the support for computers! The students consultants do an amazing job and they need to have al the necessary tools and equipment to make their job even better! I have used the CCE to assist me with my writing and I feel it has been the best experience and peer support I ever had at ISU. I plan to continue requesting this support as it is SO needed!

This proposal would potentially increase the range of students who can utilize the CCE services effectively by enabling effective virtual consultations. Also, it leverages current resources to enhance the use of the space currently allocated. This funding for technology improvements will make a big impact on everyone providing and using the CCE services.

Communication assistance is vital to successfully disseminating research into the academic community AND beyond. Thus, it is of the utmost importance that the CCE be able to offer services in these skills with the most up to date technologies. The benefit of these computers would spread much, much further than just the students coming for help in the CCE, it would be felt by anyone touched by the research that these students help innovate during and after their time at ISU. -Stephanie Fuccio
